I was brought in to work on the cluster of common rooms on the ground floor. My first consideration was functionality. They wanted a few cozy rooms for day-to-day lounging, but also a room that would work for a sophisticated entertaining. The husband had a habit of watching sports while eating at the coffee table. We decided to make dining in front of the TV a much better experience and one that invited the couple to dine together by adding two clubby leather arm chairs around a beautiful café table. This allowed the couple to dine together in style and comfort while addressing his desire not to miss a single game.

The directive was to make the rooms extremely comfortable and warm and adhere to the houses traditional style. The clients and their children were all quite tall so that meant larger deeper upholstered seating the right choice. The existing fire surround was under-scaled and inelegant. We upgraded to a limestone mantle with a better scale for the room. The pretty window treatments with French drapery hardware soften the edges of the room while the pair of demi-lune tables with mirrors opened the room and created a great surface for accessories.

Designer’s note: Designers often need to deal with tricky problems. The client had two large golden retrievers that shed all over the house. On my first meeting I could see that hair was everywhere. Since the much-loved dogs were there to stay, my mission was to make that fur less of a problem. I grabbed a cluster of the fur and kept it in my work tote for the duration of the project dropping it onto every fabric, carpet and surface I considered. When the rooms were done it was almost as if the dogs had stopped shedding.
